We all get depressed now and then; it's a normal reaction to life's hardships. But when the feeling of sadness becomes overwhelming, lasts a long time, and keeps you from leading a normal life, you could be suffering from a treatable medical condition known as major depressive disorder. More than 18 million people suffer from depression, but most never seek treatment. Left untreated, depression often worsens and causes more suffering, and could lead to suicide.
