From the Director's Desk

by Joanne Cook

It has been a pleasure to provide training, technical assistance, and support for our nine-county area this past year. We actually did not begin training until August 2002, and we provided 273 trainings between August 2002 and June 2003. We also completed the 64 Health Review Profiles (HRPs) that were assigned to us. Our nurses came back from their HRP visits excited and shared how warmly they were welcomed as they worked with agency staff to complete the HRP sample. We thank those individuals who completed forms, provided information, and met with HCQU staff.

As we begin another year, we look forward to your comments, requests, and suggestions so we can provide the best service to you and the individuals you serve. It was a wonderful experience sharing with your staff and individuals at our health fair, "Big Smiles, Healthy Lifestyles" at Wildcat Park in June. It was very rewarding to see big smiles on all the faces as they participated in various events of the day. We are looking forward to having a similar even next year.

We wish you a happy, healthy, and safe summer. If you are in the area, we invite you to stop by our office. Please send us your requests by mail, email, or telephone. I am available for speaking engagements to promote the HCQU and provide information to communities on how we are making a difference in the lives of those with mental retardation/developmental disabilities.

NWHC and CEM Team Up for Trainings
By Amy Tobolski, Behavioral Health Specialist

Over the past few months I have had the privilege of working on a team from Cameron-Elk-McKean (CEM) to develop a training curriculum centered around people with dual diagnoses of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Karen Abbot, Jennifer Messinger, Paul Snyder, and I developed, scheduled, and are preparing to present several trainings over the next few months in an effort to help providers better understand and effectively deal with some of the primary problems they face with this population. These trainings include topics such as: Mental Retardation, Assessments, Team

Building, ISPs, and Role Definitions. Inaddition, I will be presenting Identifying Mental Illness in People with Developmental Disabilities, a two-day session based on the training provided across the state by Guy Legare of the OMR Statewide Training & Technical Assistance Initiative. Some sessions are geared toward direct care staff, while others are intended to help supervisory staff. Staff of CEM providers should look for notices of these trainings as they approach, to be distributed by Karen Abbott. For our other counties, look for Mental Retardation and Identifying Mental Illness... on the HCQU curriculum in the months to come.
