The Office of Mental Retardation supports a comprehensive array of services and supports for people with mental retardation including: community residential and day support services which are either administered or operated by county MH/MR programs; contracted private residential intermediate care facilities for persons with mental retardation (ICF/MR) services or services in state centers. The mental retardation system is funded through federal, state and county funds.

Since 1876, the American Association of Mental Retardation (AAMR) has been providing leadership in the field of mental retardation. AAMR is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization of professionals (and others) concerned about mental retardation and related disabilities.
